We live in San Elijo Hills - do we play LCYO?

Yes, like any area or community, if you live in San Elijo Hills you have complete freedom in choosing which PONY Baseball league to play in, however, if you have not played with us before (2009 Fall Ball and earlier) and are concerned about All-Stars then please see our "Baseball News Blog" - which can be found under the Baseball menu.

2010 exclusion of returning High School players

For the Spring 2010 season, High School (HS) baseball players, who often finish their HS season towards the middle of May, will not be allowed to join our Spring season and, therefore, will not be eligible for our Pony Division All-Stars. Even though PONY Baseball allows for the return of High School players to a PONY Spring season, PONY Baseball provides the league (LCYO) the ability to construct "local law" enhancements of PONY rules that best address their immediate community. Our experience in allowing them to return in 2008 and 2009 created many challenges with placement on teams that were both at capacity and also 95% finished with their season. Allowing them to return for just 1-3 games in order to become eligible for All-Stars is agreed (by an overwhelming majority of polled coaches and board members) not appropriate for our recreation league and the intent of providing youth baseball for all - no matter what skill level.

Pony Baseball defined league boundaries

As a general rule, no matter where you reside you may play in any PONY based youth baseball league, however, with regard to All-Stars a player must reside within the leagues defined boundary in order to be eligible for that specific leagues All-Star program. For Pinto through Pony our approximate assigned territory can be found in our previous post that references our North and South areas.

What is the time commitment for the Spring season?

Depending on the level, practice and game times will vary. Baseball will typically practice 2x week for 2 - 3 weeks prior to the start of the season. Once the season starts, baseball has one game during the normal work week (the evening varies from week to week) and one game on Saturday (anywhere from 8am 'til late afternoon). Most divisions have limited travel (our fields are spread out to schools and parks throughout Carlsbad/Encinitas). Softball sometimes travels to play other leagues.

What are the fees for the Spring season?

Our pricing for baseball and softball are the same. At our youngest level (Tball for baseball, PeeWee for softball), ages 5 and 6, the price is $140. At our older levels the price is $170. We offer a sibling discount of $20 for each additional child beyond the first.

When does the season start?

Spring Season

- Registration runs from October 1 thru Jan 1

- Divisions of Tee ball, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony for baseball and Pee Wee, Div 1A, Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3 for softball

- Mandatory player evaluations happen the 1st/2nd weekend in January for baseball and mid-December for softball

- Tee ball and Pee Wee are coach/Director formed teams.

- All other divisions, have a formal draft after following evaluations.

- Teams are announced in January (early in the month for softball, towards the end for baseball).

- Practices start early February and run for three weeks (slightly earlier for softball).

- Season begin in late February/early March

- Two games per week

- Season ends in early June

- Fees include team jersey, hat, pants, and trophy.

Fall Baseball Season

- Registration runs from July 1 through August 15, however, divisions commonly reach capacity around August 1.

- Divisions of Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony for baseball; Div 1A, Div 1 and Div 2 for softball.

- Sunday only

- 2 - 3 practices followed by 10 - 11 game season from late August thru late November

- No draft or evaluations

- Coaches and Directors form the teams to try to reach parity and balance across all teams

- Player requests of playing with friends is acceptable

- Less intense season with emphasis on development, exposure to a new division rules/field size and various positions.

- Fees include team jersey and hat.

Even though not of age, can my son play up in the next division?

Being affiliated with Pony Organization Baseball, LCYO follows Pony's published "Traditional" 2 year age range division guidelines and does not allow players to "play up" in the next division unless they are of that age range. The only two exceptions to this rule is 1) from Tball to Pinto, however, our requirements are extremely strict in allowing this and only a few exceptions are granted each season and 2) Bronco to Pony for 2nd year Bronco players who are in 7th grade. "Play down" exceptions are allowable, however, they are not on a request basis and, instead, players (with safety issue only concerns) are identified by coaches and Directors only.

The system will not let me complete payment. What do I do?

We've had issues where antivirus software (especially McAfee) has prevented the software from working. My suggestion is to:

1) temporarily disable your antivirus software

2) register your child

3) re-enable your antivirus software

Hopefully that will solve your problem. I had the same problem and this solution worked for me.

Should I sign up for North or South?

As a rule of thumb, neighborhoods which would normally attend an Encinitas Union School District neighborhood are South. Neighborhoods which attend San Marcos or Carlsbad schools are North.

Alternatively, one can also consider all residences north of La Costa Avenue to be North.

Here's a quick map showing the general divisions.

Players may choose to play in the other division; we do however find it beneficial to generally form neighborhood teams.

What is the difference between LCYO and Encinitas Little League

Both LCYO and ENLL are excellent programs for young boys starting baseball. The key difference is the parent organization and a few minor rule differences. LCYO is a member of the Pony Organization system which adds more "major league" rules as the boys advance from T-ball to Pinto to Mustang to Bronco to Pony. ENLL is part of the Little League system which is somewhat more conservative in adding some of the major league rules regarding leading off, stealing, etc.
